Urban Watcher
When you know things disappear gradually, it is too late for salvation. Queen’s Pier, Star Ferry Pier, State Theatre, Yue Man Square, and Yau Ma Tei Carpark Building are the historical buildings of Hong Kong. Unfortunately, they have already been demolition and rebuild, which arouses most Hong Kong people to feel pity and sigh. These circumstances lead me to create artwork related to our life through photography and sound to raise awareness of paying attention to things that may disappear suddenly. It aims to remind audiences to be attentive to somethings that they are familiar with or ignored, to having a habit of re-observe the surrounding environment. Moreover, it is a chance for us to re-known about the place where we lived and discover the beauty behind it.
Artist Statement
When I started addicted to photography, Hong Kong's landscape impressed me a lot. At that time, I am not interested in the cityscape. Affected by different factors, I started to shoot between the building, street, alley, and estate, exploring the city's pulse. I gradually realize that the city has so many things worth to be captured and recorded. Whatever the people and life behavior, there always have vitality and spirit. In my eyes, they are the beauty elements that converge inside the city.
Living in a rapid lifestyle and the era of technology, we often ignore the unique and human touch. Under the social movement and pandemic, our life has been affected, and most people are forced to stay in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, we started to discover the history and beauty of Hong Kong. It leads me to create an artwork related to the city that I grow, so I made it.
To capture the most real scene of the city, The moment recorded is imagery, sound, and space. This artwork is designed as immersive and interactive art, I hope the audience can also be a participator from the first-person perspective to explore the works. The location that I choose is basic on the features of the place, local landmark, historical architecture, and collective memories. It is time for you to observe and evoke a response and sentiment.
